Comcast cable download speed slow at 45 kb/s

Hello, I'm not very tech savvy, but got a new Dell recently with 2.8 Ghz, plenty of memory and regular Windows XP features. I have a comcast cable internet connection and until up to the last month, remember getting downloads at speeds of 1, 2, or more MB/s. Now, I'm only getting about 45 kb/s. If you have a moment, please let me know if there is an adjustment within my power or if I'm at the mercy of the internet. Regards.

Cable is a shared process. The more people that are online, using the same cable wire, will slow down the others using it. Not only are the others using it, it is also carrying the programs for the television part of it. I guess if you look at it as a highway, the more things on the highway, it becomes cluttered.

Have you tried DSLreports

Run Speed Test : http://www.dslreports.com/stest and then run Tweak test: http://www.dslreports.com/tools and then DrTCP021.zip file, set RWIN to, maybe 70,000 or whatever it may suggest, the higher the number the better in its recommended range, Save, Exit, Reboot . If necessary to reset to defaults, run zip file and leave setting blank, save, exit, reboot. It worked for me.

think problem was combo. of high use and ghost programs interfering, but going to test on dlsreports today. thanx again.
