I have iPhoto "09 and over 2,000 photos. My iMac has OS 10.8.2. Going back to my iPhoto library, I discover MANY photos--that were sharp before--are now fuzzy and many others show nothing but an ! (exclamation point!!). No people or other scene. The photos are shown fine in the small photos but when I click enlarge that's when the fuzzy or ! appear.
Odd that photos next to each other can have one fuzzy and the next clear.
Suggestions, please!

could be because the original photo is not found and what you are seeing is the enlargement of the thumbnail picture.
The exclamation point indicates that iPhoto has no idea where the original is.
iPhoto 11 is the current version of iPhoto, it may be worth springing for that but, in the meantime, drag out your trusty Time Machine backup and go back to when all the pictures were good.

Hi P. Restored from Time Machine and got this message "The folder "2005" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents." The minus sign is from 2005-to-2010. How do I get permission?

I went to Time Machine, clicked on the earliest folder (May 27, 2010), screen came up with Desktop, opened Applications and clicked restore. Now have 3 iPhoto apps in Applications--Original, Original 2, and just iPhoto app.
Some photos still have "!" and some fuzzy. I thought all these photos were clear at one point.
Please let me know what else I can do.

So what you "Restored" was the iPhoto app

and not the database with all the pictures?
Place to be is in your Pictures folder which is inside your Home folder.
That is the default location for the iPhoto Library while the default location for the iPhoto app is in the Applications folder.
With iPhoto shut down navigate to your Home > Picturers folder and locate the iPhoto Library.
Now go into launch Time Machine from the Dock. You will not that it opens at the Pictures folder as it is right now.
Move back in time until you are sure things were fine.
Select and Restore the library.
You will be asked if you want to Replace the existing library or keep both.
KEEP BOTH.
Now try
