Java plug-in problem

I am using 10.5.8 with Safari and Firefox browsers. Everything was fine for pages that required java use. Now all of a sudden I keep getting a Java not installed message. I went back to my down-loaded java for mac an tried to reinstall it. I got a successfully installed message, but it doesn't seem to matter, I still get the java is not installed message. What can I do to resolve this?

Let's hope Apple tells more soon. Oracle and Apple have parted ways. It's in the news.
