I have an iPod (refurb, OS4). My computer will only recognize it as a camera (I followed the steps recommended in Apple support when your computer won't recognize your iPod and I was able to get far enough with the steps to make a screenshot and thus get that minimal recognition, before that my computer wouldn't recognize it at all). I have discovered that when I install iTunes, the drivers usbaapl.inf and usbaapl.cat aren't being installed (and yes, I have uninstalled and re-installed iTunes repeatedly). I have read that using a program called WinRAR you can extract those files from iTunes.exe and install them manually. Can anyone tell me how to do that?

The OS would be too dinged up or there is some antivirus preventing the installation.
I do not have a manual install procedure as I've always been able to correct what stopped the install.
HOWEVER you did provide a clue. HP made internet history over the dv6000/9000 series with many recalls and failures. If you have one of those, you have my sympathy.

Thanks. I followed the steps recommended to update drivers and I get the message that I have all the drivers I need to run a digital still camera.
I may have to take this to my computer guy and have him reformat the hard drive and reinstall everything (I'm not confident I could reinstall an OS correctly).

This does install the drivers MANUALLY. Well as manual as it gets unless we are to copy files, edit the registry, etc which is not possible today since no one has those steps.
It's a shame there is no story here. Such as virus, malware, registry cleaners and more.
Just last week a friend wanted to steal my iPod cable because "it was the only one that worked right." Sure it is. It's mine, find your own or fix your PC is what I told them.
It had blown USB ports so I have no idea why my cable helps.

I have seen a number of links where you can supposedly download the missing drivers I need. I assume those all trojans.

Not one involved downloading a driver, manual installs (beside the method I linked about.)
There are no missing drivers. Unless you are talking about YOUR PC'S drivers. This discussion is about the Apple drivers.
If you know your PC was not setup proper, then we can tackle that.

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538 documents how to use the usbappl.inf file.
Did you complete that work and were you able to dismiss the other concerns in this article?
