How to get rid of MacKeeper?

Amazing there's ads on many sites for MacKeeper when the forum posts seem to point to it being a gimmick, useless and perhaps even a scam. Rather than pay for an update (I bit once before) I have tried to delete it from both my Macs. But it refuses to trash! It even says it cannot be deleted. What can I do to get rid of all the MacKeeper files?

Sorry, clicking on just answer didn't work.
I was finally able to delete all MacKeeper files using the Move to Trash in Menu. Before it was always grayed out for some reason.

MacKeeper and Mac Defender are different things!

You are confusing the malware Mac Defender, which the Apple support page is about, with the utility MacKeeper, which is what sunier2 wanted to get rid of.

Restore your Mac from Time Machine. Be sure the backup is a date prior to the MacKeeper installation.
