Adding subtitles to a movie in .avi format

Apologies in advance for what is certainly a noobish question...

I have a movie file in .avi format and a subtitle file in .sfv format, and I would like to burn the subtitled movie onto a DVD using Toast Titanium. I've discovered that simply dragging both files onto the disk won't work - Toast rejects the .sfv file.

There obviously has to be a simple (?) way of combining the two files, but it's proved surprisingly difficult to find out how, so I'd be grateful for any guidance. Thank you in advance.

Checksum

An sfv file is a checksum file, not a subtitle file. Are you sure it's on an srt file or sub file?

I haven't burned subtitles with an avi to dvd, so I'm not sure Toast can do that anyway.

I know there's some windows apps that do it, but I'm not sure there's a Mac app. The most I've heard of are some that would hard-sub the video and that may not be desirable.

Maybe try creating the video and the using DVD Subtitler to add the subs.

Subtitles

My mistake. I guess the subtitle file must be the one with the suffix .sub, then, since the icon is in fact marked "SUBTITLES" (the reason I didn't catch on is that it was a compressed file).

So now I have a movie-xvid. avi file, and a movie-xvid.sub file. But how do I merge them? I've tried playing back on a variety of players, including QuickTime and RealPlayer, both with the "show subtitles" option turned on, but with no effect - it looks as though some process has to be gine through frst, but what?

Couple of things

First make sure your sub file has and index file with it. Also make sure they're named the exactly the same as your movie file before the extension.

You'll need to install Perian if you want to play it back with Quicktime Player.
