Time Machine

I have an Intel MacBook 2.4Ghz 2MbRAM running 10.6.4.

I also have a small portable 320Gb Western Digital external HD. I have used the external as a back-up for a couple of years with Time Machine and it has worked without a hitch. But I recently ungraded to a bigger external drive with more capacity. I have now decided to put the 320Gb HD back into use as a second back-up for off site storage, so I reformatted it and set it up with Time Machine, but it just wont work, it starts to copy stuff but stops after a couple of Gbs. I have checked the disc with Disk Utility which says it's ok and I have repaired permissions on the MacBook. It copy's stuff by dragging and dropping with no problems.

Any thoughts?
