Moving the cursor around the screen and putting it where you want it is easy to do. The problem is that you are not changing the Insertion point. So whenever you start typing, the type goes to the last place that had type inserted.
When you have the cursor where you want it, Click the mouse. You will find the cursor will stay still and the type will be inserted there.

Drag and drop. Put the cursor at the start of what you want to copy, click-hold and drag to the end of the thing you want to copy. Now that it is highlighted, let go of the mouse button. Place the cursor in the highlighted area, click-hold and drag to where you want it to go. Let go of the mouse.

In order for the cursor to go to the line below the one where you are typing, you must hit return/enter to register that new line. Simply putting the cursor there would not do anything because the new line does not exist. Unless you are typing in pdf using Acrobat but I doubt it.

Before making the above suggestion, I opened a file and tried it. It worked. I might have been in the middle of the file. I just opened the same file again, and went to the last visible line of text. Using the down arrow key got me about half way down the next page, which is entirely blank. Somehow, those lines exist, but I'm not sure what the limitation is. It just stopped advancing the cursor.

A new document behaved just as you indicated. The file I opened must have half a page of invisible lines at the end. After a quick peek at preferences and menus, I did not find "show paragraph".

I found it in the Command list, and it is called Show All. It shows all invisible characters. I prefer to have it off. Show All is greyed out in my Word Menu. Maybe that's because I took it out of the toolbar. Since it is grey, I cannot test the file. Maybe if I put it back in the toolbar I could.
