Flip4Mac WMV 2.3.0.14 updater installs SliverLight

The automatic Flip4Mac updater will install Microsoft's SIlverLight browser plugin automatically unless the user does a custom install. It was even going to install it on my 10.6.1 machine although the MS web site claims that SilverLight is tested through 10.5.

I have contacted the Flip4Mac support people since I believe this is Malware behavior. Most Mac users will be unaware of what SilverLight is and how it will effect their machine. Nor will most experts think to check for/remove it when troubleshooting.

If you wish to make your concerns known, contact their desktop support group, and include "Support Case 1-74223" in the subject line.

SilverLight is Malware??

If you go to the Microsoft site you can download SilverLight too. One aspect of SilverLight is that it helps computers, like a Mac, run files that don't normally run on a Mac. This includes the many formats of web movies. Flip4Mac enabled the Mac to run WMV movie files through Quicktime, but with all the odd-ball codecs running rampant, SilverLight helps run movies that Flip4Mac won't. It's supposed to run in the background like Flip4Mac. When you watch a WMV movie file on your Mac, did you even know that Flip4Mac was being used? Back to your post: Why is SilverLight Malware??

Like? Silverlight-only media? Anything VLC can't handle?
