General Mac software discussions forum: replacement program for Mac the Ripper

Handbrake will make and save a video file (the choices appear along the right-hand column) that you simply drag into Toast for DVD burning. Not sure, but Toast may need to re-encode the video file. In Toast, the best option is to save as a desktop Image File, then this file can be used to burn DVDs.

... that included a DVD ripper called RipIt 1.2.10. It advertises that it will... "Copy DVDs to your hard drive with one-click and create region-free, encryption-free backups. ". The price is about $20.00 when buying it from the developer.

Unfortunately, I am still running Tiger (10.4) and RipIt runs on Leopard osx 10.5 so I have yet to use it.

I've been waiting to buy a new mac for quite a while, anticipating Snow Leopard's release. Now that you get an OS upgrade on new machines for only $29.00 , I anticipate getting a new computer before the September release date for osx 10.6.

Buy a new machine from the Apple On-Line Store after June 8th 2009, and you can participate in the "Up to Date" program where you can get a copy of Snow Leopard for $9.95

thanks to your post, i tried and then bought ripit. rips dvds very fast, seems to have no problems with modern dvds. free trial for a week, costs under twenty bucks. a good product, good deal. thanks!

Well here it is April 2010. I used MTR 2.6 free and Popcorn for years to backup my DVDs. MTR got less and less reliable and the paid for version (3.0) was hard to come by when I started looking for a better solution. I found Fairmount and Handbrake which worked wonderful. Recently Fairmount has been falling behind and many of the DVDs (especially Sony) stop working and produced unuseable files. I decided to check into Mac The Ripper, now 4.0, to see how things were coming along. After reading all the good reviews on the product I decided to buy, uh gift, it. It works GREAT!
It took about a day and a half to receive the 2 emails with the app and license files after I Paypaled my gift.

The good news--Ripit works very well. The bad news--I used up my week's trial, paid for the program and now haven't heard back from them, so I can't use the darned thing! Don't they know about instant gratification? Thought Australia was supposed to be up on that!
