What was the name of this little "proggie" that would show you deleted files?
I assume that you have already deleted the trash.

These people offer a free trial of their software that "should" recover your file, if it has not been overwritten.
This is NOT a little proggie
Of course, if this file was so important, you could always get out the Backup CD, that you make on a regular basis, and replace it quickly and easily. What, no backup? Shame on you.

Whenever I encounter the misery of others who have lost their data, I remind myself of some basics:
- Data is not archived unless it is copied, so that exists on two drives/media (for instance, your internal drive and a CD)
- That data is not safe unless it is stored in two separate locations (for instance, your home and your office)
- Unless you use a specific archiving routine/program, you are likely to lose data you didn't even think about. (A year's worth of e-mails being a typical example.)

There are a # of file recovery programs for the Mac. Check out Version Tracker & similar sites. There are variations in price & usefulness. Supremely important, make sure the file recovery routine does NOT write anything back to the disk your lost file is on!! You'll need another disk on which to write the recovered data. Also, make sure it is able to recognize the file type you want to recover; e.g. .txt, .psd, whatever. If your file type is not on the list of files a program can recover, you are wasting time and money.
