Retrospect 6.1 rebuilding catalog file

I have some data files that I backed up on a Windows PC to a Maxtor external drive using Retrospect, and I want to restore them to my Macintosh.

I am using Retrospect 6.1 running under Mac OS X 10.4.3.
I do this:
1. Click on Retrospect Express
2. Click on Tools tab
3. Click on Repair (to rebuild a backup set catalog)
Now I am presented with a list:
Update existing catalog file
Rebuild from tapes
Rebuild from CD/DVD disks
Rebuild from removable disks
Repair file backup set.

If I choose Rebuild from removable disks, I get a message No removable media found (even though I have the external Maxtor drive running and can see the restore files in Finder)

If I choose Repair backup set, I can browse my external Maxtor drive but can only see .rdb files

I seem to be going around in circles trying to recreate the catalog set so I can restore my .rdb files.

Any ideas anyone?

There are a number of articles on the Dantz website referring to Maxtor drives.
You mention Retrospect 6.1 and then Retrospect Express, which one are you using?
What version of Retrospect did you use to backup the PC?
Does the Maxtor drive mount on the Mac Desktop? I'm guessing it does. Strange that you cannot find the catalog file on the Maxtor though. How is the Maxtor formatted? Fat32 or NTFS?
If the HD mounts and you can browse it outside of Retrospect, copy the catalog onto the HD and try again.
Could it be that the two versions are not compatible? Not just the PC/Mac thing but the Retrospect/Retrospect Express thing?

Yes. I can see all of the restore point .rdb files, and can manually copy files from the Maxtor drive to the Mac.

From what I understand, the catalog files are not supposed to be stored on the Maxtor or on the backup media, but are stored on the hard drive you backed up from. I have searched my PC hard drive and found some files that I guess may be the catalog file that the Retrospect documentation refers to. The catalog file is possibley one of these files, although none of them have catalog in the name or extension: Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/RetroExp/config10.dat, config10.bak, Config.Default.Out, launcher.dat, operations_log.utx, RtrExec.dir.

Which is the catalog file out of the files I listed above in the RetroExp directory? is it config10.dat?

However there is still the problem of why I cannot rebuild the catalog file, as the software UI in Retrospect Express 6.1 appears to suggest you can do. You get stuck in a loop if you try to rebuild the file.

Catalog Files

on my copy of Retrospect 6.1, the files are backed up to an external HD.
Inside the folder that they are backed up to is a catalog file called *.cat There is also a file, with no extension, that is a Backup Data Set. (the actual data)
There is nothing in the Retrospect folder that resembles a catalog file. I did not choose to put the catalog in the same folder as the actual backup.

Retrospect v1.0.196 for Windows with the current version at v7. You could still have a compatibility problem here.
What do Dantz say???
