Move Word doc to Appleworks

I want to take a document that I created in MS WORD 2002 to a friend's Mac with Appleworks. I don't know the Mac versions and she has no "convertor" software and does not have Internet connection. Is there a way that I can save this file on a CD so that she will be able to open it in Appleworks?

I read on another post that Appleworks will open the Word document, but my friend didn't think so.

I know I can just experiment, but I would appreciate some expert advice which will save me lots of time. Thank you in advance.

I'm going to assume you have a CD burner and can burn CD's without a problem.
First, open your Word Document and then go to File/Save As. Choose a location to save to and, at the bottom of that window, change the As Type (might be Of Type) to RTF (Rich Text Format) Then save. Now you have the original with an extension of .doc and the copy as .rtf.
Put both of them onto a CD, her Mac will be able to read your PC CD, and take it around to your friend. Built into AppleWorks there used to be a whole bunch of convertors but in the newer versions they were removed. However, AppleWorks will almost certainly be able to open the .RTF version of the file. If it does not open by double clicking on it, tell your friend to start AppleWorks and then go to File/Open menu and open it from there. Should be no problem, let us know.
Up until Version 5.5, AppleWorks could open almost any format using the built in convertors

I have Appleworks 6.2.9 and Word 2004 for Mac and can open the Word documents in Appleworks (as well as opening Appleworks into Word). In the Appleworks open documents dialogue click on "all files" and it should work.

Word 2004 for MAC opens easily on a PC with MS Word and transfer from PC to MAC works easily.
