Multimedia forum: Transfiring DV Video

It's small fast and free. Works fine on my aging laptop.

As has been mentioned don't run anything else on the PC when capturing, I have Pinnacle studio8 myself and a few other vid editing progs, I turn my modem off and stop the antivirus running even. Have you seen in the Pinnacle manual about defragging the disc and even running a scandisc at boot time to tidy up the pc before capture and not running other progs at the same time as capturing? Isn't there a provision in Pinnacle to test capture speed ? I do have a second hard drive for capture though. Have you tried capturing in Windows Movie Maker ? My Studio 8 is bit fussy over the sound when I capture in other progs and try and introduce into Pinnacle, perhaps if you use WinDV you could try capturing a small amount as DV-AVI 1 and then some as DV-AVI 2, just in case of any sound probs with Studio, which is more likely to accept the 2 version than the 1, in my case with Studio8.
I do capture as MPEG2 from my old analogue Hi8 sometimes as well, I have the bit rate in Pinnacle set at 6,000 Kbps/ when capturing MPEG2 from analogue camera, you could probably go up to 7,000 Kbps in Pinnacle as MPEG2 capturing from miniDV. At the end of the day when edited and rendered and finally burnt to DVD the movie will be compressed to MPEG2 at about 7,000 Kbps or less whatever the original source material DV-AVI or MPEG2 but for a number of reasons it's considered better to work with DV-AVI first before the final compression to DVD.
