Transfiring DV Video

I went to the store today and bought a 4 pin to 6 pin firewire cable so I could connect my JVC Mini-DV camcorder up to my PC to edit videos and burn them to DVD. I have a firewire 400 port on the back of my PC so I connected it and it was recognized. I opened Pinnacle Studio 9 (I like this software) and it found the camcorder. All of the controls worked. I then clicked capture. It was capturing in fill DV quality. There was one problem, it was dropping about 400 frames a minute according to the meeter. The audio and video were choppy. I then selected MPEG capture and it worked fine. Why will it work in MPEG and not in DV. My computer should be able to handle it. I have a 2.8 Ghz Pentium 4 with HT. I have 1.5 GB of ram, a 160GB SATA 1.5GB/s hard drive and a 256MB radeon graphics chip. Is there going to be a noticeable difference between MPEG and DV? Is there another software I can use to capture and save as and AVI fle and then open in in Studio 9? Thanks for all of your help! Any questions please post.
