cd player doesn't start-can't read data (OR FILES)

Dell dimension 400v,Win98-SE,128 mb ram,IDE CDRW 2X2X6.Windows media player 9.0. All cd player components are working properly but for some reason when I put in a cd and start it the cd player, it reads no data or no cd in drive and the media player box comes up and reads- cannot find specified file.I know the cd drive works and I can watch/listen to music and videoes online, so the problem must be in the cd player files.I've tried all the media player help and trouble shooting advice and still nothing.I've been to the Dell website and even re-installed my media player.The cd actually starts in the cdr but the files are either in the wrong place or written wrong or don't exist.I just don't know how to find or repair them. HELP!!

Is this one CD or all CDs?

If it's one CD, the CD is probably bad since the computer cannot even detect the disk.

If it's all CDs, the CD drive is probably bad.
