External network HD versus internal HD

To keep my growing stock of pictures, music and videos I need to get more storage. I was planning to get an external network hard drive (400 or 500 gigs) but started considering an internal drive recently. Does anyone have thoughts on pros/cons? The internal is cheaper, but are there any drawbacks? Would leaving the PC on 24/7 be louder or take more energy than a network drive?

Was there some detail about other machines or maybe web access that was in your plan but not shared?

The network drive is fine, but where is the power savings since to access it, your PC has to be on.

NAS or internal HD

I would recommend a NAS solution, i.e., network attached storage. It is a lot more flexible and robust than a Windows file server and much much less expensive. Check out snapappliance.com.
