Cant watch video properly: buffering

Dont know if this is the best forum for this but here goes. I cant watch videos properly on the internet. The video will load, and Ill see "buffering" on the skin of the window. Then the video will play correctly for a few seconds, then it will start "buffering" again, and so on. After a while, even when its not buffering, and the clock is moving foreward as if the video were playing, it freezes, or plays the video as a series of still shots. Can anyone help? Heres my info.
New AMD Athlon 3000+ 64 bit, 200gb hard drive, 1024mb RAM, Radeon 9250 graphics card. I usually browse with Firefox but this problem occurs in IE as well.

Internet connection

What type of Internet connection do you have? Broadband? Dial-Up?

Does this occur exclusively using Windows Media Player or do other media players do the same thing?

Oh yes, forgot to include. I have DSL 512kb, in theory (i.e., thats what Im paying for). At one test site it told me my connection was at 134kb. And sometimes Ive downloaded things from CNET, where the estimated time for a 56kb dial-up modem was, say, 3 minutes, and its taken five or more on my computer. I know Norton is infamous for slowing down systems, but with my ample HD and RAM I cant see how it could make that much of a dent. My official processor speed is 2gh. Could it have anything to do with my ISP? Im using a start-up one in Spain.

Yes this normal, can happen with any streaming content. How often it happens will depend on your conncetion speed and internet congestion.
I would keep an eye on your speed by running speed test from time to time. If you paying for 512kb is should test at least 450kb. My DSL is 780kb if it tests below 500kb I reset my DSL modem.
Yes realplayer has been a backdoor for spyware, but XPSP2 firewall will block it(so far).
With a 2ghz processor Norton should not be a problem, but you should have at least 512mb of menory. John

Right, the media player. So far its only windows media player that does this. Ive been hesitant to dowload others because my last computer got a whole bunch of nasty stuff on it through a back door in Real Player. Of course, then, I was much more naive, and didnt have antispyware, up-to-date AV, etc. In case it matters, the OS is Windows XP pro.
