.NET Messanger Service

I run Windows XP Pro; IE 6; Outlook Express 6

Whenever I click on Send/Receive at Outlook Express, the Windows Messanger icon appears at the Tray, prompting me to register with .Net Messagger Services...etc. I do not use Windows Messager nor intend to in the near future. How do I stop the icon and the prompt from coming up ? I have unchecked the boxes for "Run this program when Windows starts" and "Allow this program to run in the background" at the options/preferences tab at Windows Messanger, but that icon still came up...I have also been to msconfig/start up, but was not sure which item to uncheck.. Maybe it can be stopped by uninstalling Windows Messagger, but that is an option I do not wish to take, for fear of creating more problems. Any ideas ? Thanks.

How to kill Windows Messenger AND Messanger Service (two different programs)

While there are many ways to kill the Windows Messenger (search google to see the others), I prefer this method:

Navigate to your Program Files folder and locate the MESSENGER folder. Rename it to MESSENGER HIDDEN. It will never load, and if you ever want to use it, simply rename it back to MESSENGER. (you need to exit Messenger before changing name)


In addtion Windows Messenger is NOT the same as Messaging Services (which SHOULD be disabled.

Here is how

If you use XP you need to disable the messaging services

start / run...
services.msc
scroll down to messaging
right click and properties (or double click)
set to STOP
set start up type to DISABLE
okay
