How to stop folders synchronising in MS Outlook

I have MS Office 2003 on a Dell 380 Precision with XP professional and am having the continual annoyance of "Folders Synchronising" every time I open Outlook, which slows down, and sometimes even stops, mail from being downloaded. I have tried many solutions but still have the problem. Can anyone give me a final solution to stop this infuriating problem?

Synchronizing with what? Do you have a pop3, an IMAP or an MS Exchange mailbox?

Hi Kees,
I have no idea what is being synchronised all I have is the icon showing in the bottom right hand corner and I only have a Pop3 account.

No, it shouldn't happen if all you have is a pop3-account.

The only other thing I can suggest is moving to a new Windows account. Set up Outlook there and see if it's solved. Backup your .pst file. Then import everything you need from the .pst file in your old account. Might just work. Copy the .pst file regularly so you can fallback to a previous version if it goes wrong. And DON'T delete the old .pst file until you're very sure you don't need it any more.
