windows live mail keyboard character problem

I have just bought a new computer and am using Windows Live Mail. When I type in " or ' it looks fine when I actually type it but when I send the message these characters change to strange letters eg when I typed 'our table' it changed to incomprehensible characters. I tried to show them as an example but got a message saying they are not part of a standard English keyboard - which I already know!!!! I have searched everywhere and cannot find a solution. Can anybody help??? Thanks, Barbara, Surrey, UK

earlier today, but for the life of me I can't remember where.

If I recall, it may be something about encoding and with that in mind have a look at the two links below;

If neither help, the Google search term I used was WLM how to change encoding so you may have better luck with that.

Anywhere near Sutton? I lived there many decades ago. My family moved to Ipswich, then Cambridge, but I found them each time! devil
