Skype - Dialed Number Blocking & Hijacking

by dshuck - 1/8/12 1:14 PM

I don't know if anyone continues to follow Skype Services (or the lack thereof) or not but just in
case I wanted to share the following.

I am a Skype Telephone Services
Customer, which allows me to have a permanent telephone number and the
ability to dial external (non-Skype) telephones pretty much anywhere. I
pay for a small monthly charge for this service and an annual fee for
the assigned phone number.

Last month I tried to dial my local Walgreen's Pharmacy (the way I have
been doing on Skype for months), and much to my surprise instead
of reaching Walgreen's the call was redirected answered by the "Free 411" Service and a number of Ads. (which I believe is owned the Marchex Company, www.marchex.com. I reported the issue immediately to Skype Support and now 6 weeks later the problem
persists. I have contacted them numerous times but nothing ever changes.
Each time that I complain to Skype I receive a "boiler-plate" response
that they have referred this issue to their technical group for
investigation and resolution. The issue never gets resolved and they never send any follow-ups or updates.

The other night I tried to call a number of Walgreen's around Ft Myers
and all the calls were hijacked by "Free 411". So I decided to widen my
investigation, I called a number of Walgreen's in the major cities in
Florida and all call went to "Free 411". I then tried calling
Walgreen's in Georgia and got the same results. I finally called a
Walgreen's 24 Hr store in Chicago and I actually got Walgreen's.

If I
were a conspiracy theorist I might come to the conclusion that Skype is
actually allowing this to happen. Free 411 could be paying them or a
competitor of Walgreen's could also be behind this.

If it were only Walgreen's being affected I might buy the premise that
Skype is just incompetent but there are other examples, here is one. I
am a Dish Network customer and when ever I have a technical problem with
their service I call them on the support number (800-333-3474). The
problem is that for over six months now Skype has "blocked" that
number. The first response from Skype Support was as follows; "Moving
forward, the number 18003333474 which is a USA-Toll Free number is not
currently supported by Skype. This occurs most often because the number
you are dialing is a local toll free number or premium phone number that
charges users a per minute fee to their phone bill". The second Skype
response, after I pushed the issue, was as follows; "We understand that
you confirm this issue to the owner of the number that you are trying to
call. Please understand that we do not supported the number as of the
moment since we blocked it in making calls using Skype account. This is
due to an increased number of fraudulent calls to that number, we have
blocked it while we investigate. The number will remain blocked until
further notice."
Here again I wonder if they are being paid off by a competitor of Dish
Network.

Have you received any other complaints such as this concerning Skype?

I am in the process of filing a a complaint with the FCC on these
issues. I spoke with the FCC on Friday and they asked that I file the
complaint, they were most curious about this as well.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Best regards,
