Who is causing the spam?

We are getting the odd spam message from a relative who uses a hotmail account. The spam is addressed directly to us, and the From is definitely them. To me this looks as if their email address book has been mined. The only trouble is everybody else in the family says they are not getting this, so it must be our system. But if that were so, surely the other party's address would have to be in our address book and when I looked it was not. We are firewalled and virused and trusted programme protected by Comodo, which tends to err on the side of caution if anything.
I just checked and the _only_ messages we have received from that hotmail address are spams. We have not sent any messages to that address.
So all of that looks to me as if it's not us, but why are we (apparently) the only ones to have got the spam?
I am not looking for blame here, although I know that telling the Cousin that their system is possibly "dirty" can cause some trouble. But until we work out who is breached, it can't be fixed.
So is there any way to check a system for this? Ours is resident and live protected at all times. We have had no warnings for ages.
Thanks for any help
Nick
