Outlook Express - I have lost all my Messages!

Outlook Express asked to compact the messages. When it had finished, all of my Inbox was empty. Anyone know why this happened and if I can recover the messages? I have compacted before and this has never happened before.

Outlook express - recycle bin

There were some Outlook files in there so I restored them but it has made no difference. They don't come up when you launch the program.
