My experience and resolution
I found this happened when I wanted to receive my mail in Outlook, I imagine it happens in Outlook Express as well. I have OS WIN XP Pro, you may be using OS WIN XP Home or OS ME or WIn 98, anyhow it relates to any of the above. When I decided I didn't want to use my ISP's mail features, I would open Outlook (i have dial-up too) and wait for the ISP server to download my mail. It was a 60/40 shot as to whether my computer crashed or just gave me this error msg. and would not release anything else. After doing this again and again, I succumbed and used the ISP mail (MSN). I found it would time-out and freeze up. I felt I was forced to use the ISP's mail system because I then lacked the knowledge of how to adjust and troubleshoot. I think if I had known there is a timer built-in to my system, I would have adj.it. That would resolve the problem with freezing and then returning to find it functioning but not if it completely crashes and you have to press ALT, CTRL, DEL. (I experienced both) You can try to extend the allotted time you have for lg. files downloaded in the mail by going into your internet settings and selecting your acct. and change, then hit advanced and look for a slider bar. Generally its set to 90 secs., try experimenting. Another easier route is to purchase a utility suite that simply has a button to click (and other valuable tools), which allow you to disable whatever your computer does to create the time-out when waiting for your ISP's server to do its thing. (Some ISP do not allow this however). And those of us on older computers, using older OS can wait some time...good luck. Another thing could be the need to max out your RAM if you have several programs running simultaneously and then open your email prog. and experience a crash. Get on the Net and order it after confirming exactly what you need from your CPU's manual.
