E-mail, chat, & VoIP forum: Poll: How much e-mail spam in a day do you get?

I didn't want to change the addresses I've been using for years, and found the filtering and spam tools on The Bat too fiddly and unpredictable, so I don't mind paying a few dollars a month for onlymyemail.com; my mail is directed there first before coming to me, and it's very effective in getting rid of the spam. I go in every couple of days to its site to see if there's anything I SHOULD have received. There are usually one or two things and I delete the rest. It's not perfect but it works well enough for me.

Back when I used Outlook Express I would use Yahoo Mail to give to people that I didn't know. I switched to Gmail as my main account two years ago and since it has such a great spam filter, I give my Gmail address to everyone. Now get this, I get over 5000 spam mails a month and only one or two make it to my inbox and so far no legitimate mailings have gone into my spam folder.

Two years ago, when I switched to Comcast high-speed Internet and changed my e-mail address, the spam abruptly stopped. Other than the fact that my new address hadn't been "discovered", I don't know why this occurred. It might be Comcast's spam filters. Comcast encourages users to report spam e-mail.

I currently get two or three spam e-mails a week. I used to get 20 or more a day.

I have the bulk email filter set to the highest level; however, lately a lot of spam has been sneaking through into the inbox. I notified Yahoo about this and requested that they either do a MUCH better job at filtering or remove the 500-address limit on their blocking list (make it unlimited). All that does is keep the spammers and spoofers from using a specific address or domain again. I looked for a free version of Mailwasher, but could only find the paid. My system is to filter my email through Yahoo, and then archive it in Outlook. I use disposable addresses to sign up for things online, and when the spam starts, I dump that address. =)

In a word, ZONE ALARM!! This program pretty well does the job of holding spam to a minimum.

We switched to Macs in 2004 and use our ISP's email addresses. We receive about five spams per week in each account.

I'm ruthless with DELETE for anything I don't recognize (I am subscribed to various items of interest). If I don't know you, you're outta there!!

I don't think any answers here do much but tell you to change service to AT&T or give up. I have had my e-mail since Commodore 64 days using bulletin boards. Now I average 100 to 200 spams a day (80 to 100 a day on the weekends).

My challenge is that I have thousands of engineers (potential customers) that have my e-mail since it is only my first name lee@.... Thunderbird filters 90% of incomings - which is my only suggestion if you want to keep your same old-old email address. (which I obviously do)

Having 3 or 4 e-mail addresses is for the newbies (since 1997 users) but changing addresses, providers or adding a private would lose me lots of engineering opportunities. I don't see what 3 addresses would do for me - if I still had to check all of them every day. It is easier dealing with the same-oh-same-oh address using Mozilla Thunderbird's filter.

I use Outlook Express and when I get what appears to be spam but I am uncertain if it is or not, I will right click on the email, click properties, click details then message source. This will allow you to read the sender and the body without exposeing your computer. I have not, to my knowledge, been burned by using this method to check something out in order to decide "good" or "bad".

Gmail spam filter does a great job for me. I get less than 1-2 spam messages in my inbox per week, while gmail pushes about 50-day to my spam folder. I use the net extensively, but am careful about "registering" or attempting to "win" contests. Haven't found anything better than gmail's filter, for my situation at least.

My ISP use McAfee Postini to filter what is can based on my e-mail filter settings. Even with this, 10-20 Spammers get through and the I have to use IncrediMail's Spam blocker, and bouncer to finish the job. If I am not watchful and forget and use the "Open Next e-mail" option, I have opened a "SPAM" e-mail and my PCTools Firewall did a good job and stopped any outbound traffic. PCTools Spyware Doctor does a good job of keeping out the Spyware notifiers of what I am doing.

Cloudmark Safety bar is based on Human intelligence. When I block a piece of spam, I block for 1.5 million other people. and likewise. IT is mushc better than say barracuda which uses bayesian filters and a small group of in house blockers

First, never, ever use work email when signing up on web sites, ordering products, etc. Often work email environments don't have the spam protection that larger email organizations offer.

I use a Yahoo account as my personal email for which I pay about $20 per year. The Yahoo Mail Plus service. These guys ROCK when it comes to filtering Spam. I usually get 35 to 40 spams messages per day neatly tucked into my spam folder. I review it once per week as very, very rarely there might be message from a known vendor that I actually want to see. However, the yahoo accuracy is uncanny. I'd peg it at 99.5% or greater.

I highly recommend yahoo or something like it to keep spam to a minimum in your email box. It is well worth $20 per year.

I use Thunderbird for my email client, I love it's spam filter options.If something does get past the filter, I look in the subject line or body for some key words that will send things straight to the junk folder (to be deleted automatically after a short time where I can quickly scan it for any legit emails that might have slipped in. The filters also help me route emails from friends into their own folder, business related emails into their own folder and "bakon" email into its own folder. On top of all that, I keep three different email accounts: One for registering on websites as a requirement for using services or posting to blogs and forums, one for my bills and services I sign up for, and one personal one. This way, I can pretty much tell who's giving out my address when I sign up for something and a certain account suddenly begins receiving new spam.

My ISP, using Postini, removes almost 100% of the spam coming to my inbox. It also removes 1-2 messages that I want to read.
With Postini it is easy enough to review the spam, deliver what I want to read and permanently delete the remainder. Takes all of 5 minutes.

At first junk mail was a big problem, they wanted to give me my winnings from lotteries, sell me cheap pharmaceuticals, give me a new mortgage at reduced rates.
I first started blocking the adresses, the junk that made it past this
step i would try to open and unsiscribe. My next plan of attack would be to adding them all to a list in my email,instead of deleting them, i could forward all the email back to all of them and i didn't care where they came from, aslong as there wasnt any personal info or just general spam mail. They soon took me off there list's ..everyone happy. If you have to change your email, it is easy enough to go to live hotmail. Its free and you get 5 gig of storage with alot of extras. I have been using hotmail for years and i am very happy with it,and if you have to change your email again it's not a big hassle. Remember to give them enough rope to hang themselves(they will).
Send everything back to them, this also works with snail mail from the post office. I hope that i have helped, and not just rambled on.
