Can't see any emoticons in Yahoo Messenger.

My apologies if this query has already been answered. I went through at least about 70+ Yahoo Messenger and emoticons posts, but couldn't find my problem being discussed anywhere. Here's my problem :

Since, the first time I installed Yahoo Messenger(about a yesr back), I have never been able to see any emoticons sent by my friends or sent by me. Instead, I always see a small red cross in a box. However, my friends can see the emoticons that I send them. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Yahoo Messenger umpteen times, upgraded it to the latest versions available (thru ver 6.1 to the current 8.1), but still cant see them. The emoticons list is visible though.

I have always kept the "Emoticons" options in Yahoo "Messenger--->Preferences" enabled, but still no respite.

I have been using Windows XP SP1 (never reformatted it since that last 2 years), multiple security apps. (AVG Free + ZoneAlarmm Free + SpywareBalster + AdAware + Spybot). I wonder if my Windows XP or all these security apps. are cauing any problems.

Its been 10 days and not a single reply.....surprising...anyways, I think I will B able to see emoticons only when I change my PC or have to reformat it for some unfortunate reason.

goto messenger,
preferences, category messages, miscellaneous,enable emoticons,
make sure checkmark shows lit up.

When I said that I had enabled the emoticons option in Preferences, it meant Messenger-->Preferences-->Messages-->Miscellaneous. I have clicked and unclicked that Emoticons option half a dozen times, logged off and on again and again, but still no luck.
Anyways, thanks for taking the time out to read my problem and reply.

If what U meant to ask me is that if I ever have shut down my PC and restarted it after trying to tweak with the Messenger settings, let me assure U that I have done it often. But, still no respite. Anyways, I have learnt to live without emoticons...

Hello!
I had the same problem, but I fixed it.
The images didn't work on Internet explorer either, but because I don't use IE, I didn't notice that until today. If the pictures don't work in your IE either, then I know how you can fix this.

So, open Internet Explorer, go to Tools -> Internet Options then click on the advanced tab. Scroll down to the multimedia.. thing and then make sure that "show image download placeholders" and "show pictures" are checked.

thank god!! i had this problem for months and it was driving me insane! i kno its just emoticons but i like them and im pretty OCD about it. after months of doing everything i could possibly think of, of uninstalling and reinstalling ALL available versions of yahoo messenger, i finally found this post and fixed the problem in 10 seconds. THANK YOU

hey angrymousecat my defult windows live emotions work but i downloaded the kiwee toolbar tons of awesome emotions but when i'm sending them to my m8's they can't see themso i looked at your comment i hooope it works cause you would have solved my big problem and i really want them to work cause there awesome!! so anyway if they turn out in the end not to work what could you suggest i do
