If I take this question literally, then I know of no solution.

If I did want another program to launch, I would first save the attachment, then in explorer or desktop, do the Right Click, OPEN WITH and select a new default application. OE (here at least) now uses the new application.

When I right click the attachment file in my email software, I see a "Save as" option.

I then save the attachment to my Desktop, it's an easy place to find it later. Then I either open the file from there by double clicking, or if my Windows doesn't recognise what type of file it is I right click, select "Open with" then browse to the application I need.

If I don't have the right application for that type of file then I reconsider whether I need the file or not and if so, I get that application.

It's standard procedure in XP so if that right click > "Open with" option isn't there on your system it seems there is some damage somewhere.

Don't forget that clue. Save the attachment file first before opening it.
