Getting rid of retangular space behind cutout image and sele

HI all., another question - ie 2 really.
After I have extracted the image from the picture and cleared any visible background with the extractor tool and cleaned up the edges . . .
1. How do i remove the retangular space background behind the knocked out image and
2. How do i then select just the remaining image so that i can shift it around on the blank space (layer) and size and resize it to suit my purposes??
Any help would be good help for a 'Senior' Newbie!

Using either knockout 2 or Adobe pse9 extractor tool

the cutout part i can manager - but its getting rid of the white rectangle or pattern left behind and being able to select, ten freely move the remaining image/item around on the space and resizing it (larger or smaller is where I'm stuck!

is something called an eraser, which you can use to make the background transparent. Alternately, if you select the area you want to remove, when you hit the delete key, it should also make that transparent. Then what you're left with is just the remaining image, which you can move, resize, and change, without having to worry about the background.
