that does this and if one existed, I'm sure it would cost a good amount of money. Teaching a program what pictures to consider alike without having a "human" context would be very difficult.

That said, there may be a way you can do this online. You'd need a website to upload all your photos to. Then you let Google index all your pages and images. You then do a Google image search using something like "site:yourdomain.com keyword" -- the keyword would be something to perhaps keep projects separated -- and look at all your pictures. Then hover over any one picture and click "similar", which will show you similar pictures. I don't know how granular this will be, because of the above stated difficulties, but if you really want a solution, you can try it. You'd still have to manually figure out where they are stored and what to do with this information afterwards, unless you just re-saved the images from Google.

Hi Sovreign, many thanks for this suggestion. Whilst I am guessing it won't do exactly what I was looking for, it could be a very useful tool.

I thought I'd heard about some software which in particular could find very similar images (ie almost duplicates) which used some sort of fractal calculation. Maybe the google 'similar' function does something along these lines, I will give it a go with a small subset of the photos and see what happens. Will update here to complete the thread.
