which graphics package? similarity/differences?

I know next to nothing about graphics/digital imaging so am thinking of doing a short evening course at a local college to get me started.

I have access to adobe design premium CS3 (inc P'shop CS3) & have downloaded Gimp, but the college uses paint shop pro (I don't know which version). I don't want to waste my time or money & am not sure if learning about graphics/digital imaging on PSP will transfer across to P'shop or Gimp.

I guess some basic priciples (diffence between gifs & jpegs, etc) will apply to any program, but what about actualy using the different programs?

Any advice/comments appreciated.

that Photoshop is the industry standard, at least from my experience. It is true that there's more to designing than actually using a program to get a task done, so this class may be helpful, but there are also a lot of Photoshop tutorials out there that teach you how to accomplish certain things that may be even more valuable. I would suggest a book on Photoshop and reading it at your own pace and to then follow the books' tutorials. If you get stuck, you've got the Web and forums like CNET where people can help you. I honestly think that you would gain more from doing that.

I wanted an approach that would take me step-by-step from knowing nothing, to having a grasp of the basics but most books seem to be how to do specific tasks. I came across Deke McClelland's "photoshop one-on-one" book,& I reckon that'll get me started.
