What makes you think that have been recovered?
You said "they are safely sitting on my desktop". What makes you think that have been properly recovered?
The files you recovered may not actually be valid image files. The simple problem of a missing filename extension (such as no ".jpg on the end) may make most viewers unusable, since they usually demand not only a filename extension, but also the correct filename extension (such as .jpg is not good for a .bmp file).
You could try IrfanView, when will open files that have no, or incorrectly labeled filename extensions. IrfanView will just inform you of the missing or incorrect extension, and ask if you want it renamed. You do not have to agree to the renaming to allow IrfanView to open that file.
Try IrfanView. For most common, valid image file types, IrfanView will work. I glaring lack of open-ability would be with ".Raw" file types. Only because of the lack of standards with .raw files. IrfanView can open some .raw types, but you need some experience of how your pictures are stored before you can do that.
