Graphics forum: cant open images, possibly corrupted?

to right click on the picture

select open with

choose program

select paint

See if the image opens. If it does, then do this again except this time check the box that says "always use the selected program to open this type of files."


If it does NOT open

The right click on the picture

choose open with

choose Internet Explorer

If picture opens,

right click on the picture and choose save as
change the bottom to bitmap. Then open the bitmap using paint and change it to a jpeg. You can then see and view the picture in question.

This is how I open a picture that I have trouble with. If there is an easier way, I'd like to know it too.

Since you tried IrfanView (and I have to assume you did try it correctly*) and since IrfanView is among the best of opening pictures that are just a bit munged (messed up) then I would venture to say that your images are pretty much screwed.

(* Correctly? You do not need to associate any of the graphic file types to use IrfanView to view it. All you need to do is either:
1) Have IrfanView open and drag the graphic files into the opened window. OR
2) With IrfanView open, you can use the File>Open command, with the "Files of Type" selection just set to "All files" so that you can see all of the files, not just graphic related file types.

In either case, even though IrfanView may mentioned that the filename extension (if it is even there) is incorrect, you may tell IrfanView to open it regardless. You do not need to change the filename extension at all.

can view all common photo formats in a variety of modes including near full screen. There are also other applications built into Windows which can open photo files. I'm surprised by the question Kevin.

However, the best software in the world is not of much use if the file is corrupted.
