I see the XML which is interesting, but later a PUBLISHER may have been noted which could lead you somewhere.

Here's my question. Why not ask the person who sent this what program they used?

It's possible that somewhere along the way someone or something accidently moused the file too long and had to name the file again (rename...)

When sharing photos, I pretty much stick with JPEG or .JPG files so others can read such.

Thanks for the report back and with the two programs I noted plus the Notepad examinator method, I suspect you'll be adept at solving this issue again if it occurs.

Marcia, I hope you are still watching this thread. I only just read it today. I have the HP disc creator program which came with my HP printer, but had not used it before, so you got my curiosity so I did a sample. Here's what I found:

The program let me add a bunch of pics (and movies and sounds if I wanted) to an 'album', and it writes the album to the disc together with a program to run them as a 'slideshow', or just as thumbnails which you can click on to bring up a larger size, or 'album' view.

Once the disc is created it does have two files with extension PVM: One is album.pvm, and the other is index.pvm. The disc created is supposed to autorun when you put it in a cd player or a dvd player. My pics are in jpg format and by using a file manager (like Windows Explorer) I could find the jpgs in two different locations on the disc (I expect one is for the thumbnails.) When I doubleclicked on the album.pvm it brought up the album and I could run the slideshow, etc.

I suspect what your friend emailed you was only part of what was on the disc. I think what your friend should have done is: zip up all the files on the disc, email it to you; then you would have to save it to your hard drive, unzip it, and then burn those files to a CD. You could then put that CD in your player in the computer and run it on the monitor, or put it in a DVD player and view it on the TV.

Worth a try.... It's nice to be able to share pics.

I just downloaded some pictures from my HP camera to "my pictures". Instead of them being saved as jpeg in the my pictures month taken folder they were automatically saved into an album called album.pvm and I am unable to open the file. Can someone help me?

I will try to remember that HP calls it PMV.

A blast from the past.
I have a hpscanner etc and my pics ore on Photosmart. Suddenly for no apparent reason one of the albums changed from JPEG to PVM and I cannot open the album.
All is not lost as I have them all still in the main browser section but it will ake ages to extract these special pics into a new album. The only mmmmmention I can find about PVM is that it is a HP file extension and this is the only thread I have seen that that others have the sameproblem although it was some years ago. So if anyone out there hears my plea and knows what I can do please reply. I am in darkest England and we are (at least) I am a bit thick.

I recently tried to pull up picture files and am unable to because they are in pvm format instead of jpeg. I used to have an hp and now have a sony vaio. Is there a way that I can change the file extensions on these files. I've tried but can't seem to find a way to change these extension.

Hope somebody is still reading this thread. I changed the program which opens the album files in my documents that were created when an album is created in HP photosmart premier 6.0. I changed one file and all the album files were changed. I think the file ext. (.pvm) remained the same as what was originally created but am not sure. It was a dumb move and I would like to return these files to what they were originally. The icon that used to be associated with these file looked like a dog-eared page with 6 dots. I have tried every program in the bin file in HP imaging and cannot find the original program associated with these album files. I do not want to delete the folders as they have been edited and reinstall the program and start over. If anyone has photosmart premier 6.0 and can identify which program is associated with the album files created and stored in my docs (XP Media Center) and what the file ext. on these files is, I would greatly appreciate it. Correction, the disc doesn't autorun on the computer, you must go into Windows Explorer, find your CD drive, and look for a file called 'homepage.htm', doubleclick on it will bring up the program so you can view the pics.

There is also a file called "index.pvm" which will bring it up, but it takes a longer time to come up because it reads all the pics into memory first.

I was trying to consolidate and organize my photos and I find my photos entered in PVM. I can't open anything that is stored with it.How do I avoid it if it not useful? I don't know what it is for. I would rather keep everything in my documents.

I don't know if this will help but My files seemed to lock up after I tidied them up into folders where they were in my documents. Don't know if this has anything to do with it but it might ring a bell. I scanned my pictures again and it sent those to my documents/my albums to. I left them alone this time and even though they read pvm they still open and the pictures themselves show as jpg.?????? No problems this time so far.
You won't have to rescan as I did. You could get them back from your software programme (I use Photosmart Premier) by copying from your image vault into new albums or your back up recovery image vault. These seem to be automatic in my programme. Worked for me so let me know if this is as clear as mud and you want to know more.
You may want to put them into files instead of albums as another way to save them. Might be orth trying.
