and there are the first 128 bytes of the file, I used Hackman Hex editor. Hope this is useful for you.

You are right, none of my jpg files has the first 128 bytes correct, I've checked one file that is not damaged and I confirmed what you said

There is no one answering your request for help because you hi-jacked a previous thread, and people are either just not seeing your new post, or they may think that there is already enough detail in all the messages of this thread to get your problem resolved.

You really ought to create your post as a brand new entry in this forum. Perhaps then your will get noticed.

I tried to open the jpg file with IE but did not work, it shows the little red "x".

As I said, this was the result after I used the "Get Data back" application to recover a partition I got lost.

I have seen the same thing in GetDataBack. My take has always been that if the application cannot read the file, then the file recovered by GetDataBack is not useable. Thus, if Photoshop cannot read an image file, or Word cannot read a DOC file, the recovered file is no good. I think GetDataBack is a great product which has recovered lots of stuff for me after hard disk problems. However, it does not, and probably cannot, recover everything.

That's my take, but I'ld love to see someone post a solution to recover all files.

or damaged. In other words, the HD's directory structure, at least from the OS point of view, is gone or severely damaged. GetDataBack tries to reconstruct files under those circumstances. I'm assuming that, in some cases, it simply inserts bogus sectors into the file. It works with files which were successfully saved by the application before the hard drive went south.

i am unavailable to view some photos on my computer. i dont know what happened to them so i thought i'd ask for some help.
the files exist, as too the details ect. but when opened they just wont view on any program i try. i have tried lots of programs to recover them but nothing has worked.
some programs say 'can't read file header' and others 'file corrupt' etc.

hi .. i need urgent help on this .. 1 of my folders has around 65 jpeg files. all of them r very important n i cant lose any of them.

yesterday i cut paste that folder into another location. n widout cheking, 2day i cut paste it back 2 where it was. wen i opened the folder, i cud c all the files perfectly. file name, file size, everything was perfect. only there was no preview in thumbnails, and when i clicked on a file to open it, it said 'no preview available. when i opened in photopshop, it says, " could not complete your request because reading spatial/lossless JPEG files is not implemented ". when i imported in flash, it said ' one or more files cannot b imported because there is a problem reading them '. once it also gave an error that the file is damaged. these files were perfect till last nite, b4 i cut paste them sumwhere else. rite now all files have proper file names n file size is also the same. but i cannot c any picture. this problem is in only one folder. A sotware Infraview gives the error 'Cannot read file header, unknown file type, or file not found'. PLEASE PLEASE HELP.

my system restore is on, but wen i went to restore it, it said there r no restore points. n i always do cut paste. drag n drop is the same thing anyways. can it b damaged because of compression ?

Hi there, im having the same problem. Ive just realized that the .jpg files can be opened with the Windows Fax Viewer. The solution... use the Windows Fax Viewer to save as each file. My real problem now is that i need to do that 3000 times, does any one knows about a realy good batch program that can help me with this?

I had the same problem that all the pictures I moved were unreadable. I also was then unable to move or delete them again (the system would say they are read only or in use). I went into UWIN (a UNIX shell program) and found that the permissions looked like this:

In the above, I was unable to read Bertie2.jpg in any program, but the others were fine. I made this program available again by using the following command in UWIN:
chmod 777 Bertie2.jpg

That enabled all the permissions for this file and I was able to read it again. Note that I couldn't change the permissions using Windows XP (another reason to use UNIX).

I would recommend either getting a UNIX program like UWIN to change the permissions or find some Windows program that has better control over permissions than Win XP Pro.

I hope this helps you recover your lost data. I know how shocked I was the first time this happened to me, since I manage a website for dog pictures. Also, it would be nice to know why the permissions are being changed on the cut-paste (or click and drag) in the first place and why it only seems to affect jpg's using Windows Explorer. I can move files using ACDSee or UWIN fine.

Sorry it's too likely the file contents are corrupt. If IRFANVIEW can't view them then all that may have survived is the name only.

Just wondering. Didn't anyone tell you to stop using the media if you want to recover content?

Sorry if this comes out badly. This issue is all about the choices we make. That is if we don't copy our stuff to backups then we can lose stuff. Again, if we operate on our only copies then what happens can turn out badly.

If your backups are failing then those are not backups. I'd revisit your backup plans as this will only repeat over time.
