Andrew, No software needed. Just file basics:
Make a new folder called NEW Family Archive Photos 2005 on your desktop. Within that folder add new folders as you need, as to dates and families, etc. Plus sub-folders within those folders as you need to catalog these images.
Open up all your other family photo folders and copy all the different photo files you have to the new folders.
You will receive a warning message every once in a while: There is a file called XYX or, whatever, to your images already there. Do you want to replace these files? Click yes.
Once you have your new folders with all the new copied images, review the images and once you have all the images OK'd and you are SURE you are satisfied, delete all the original folders by dragging them into the trash.
All the old photos will be in your new folder called NEW Family Archive Photos 2005.
Assuming that you have not changed the original image than everything should be fine. Rename some of the photos if in doubt.
Check all the original images and rename them before doing anything.
Example: Mom. Do you have 200 photos called Mom in different folders? Be careful!

I for one, do not have a clue to what is out there to eliminate duplicate pucture files.
Would be kind of neat to have a software program that deleates duplicate files/folders on your system with both Mac and PC also.
The easiest way and not the safest way to eliminate duplicate photo files for you is to set up a new folder called XYZ of your choice. Copy all your photo images to this folder. Duplicate names will be updated and you can delete all the old folders.
Warning to you. Like I posted before, if you have files for example called "MOM", and the files are really different, just rename them. Check all the files in the old and new folder before deleating the originals.

I've been looking at threads here and there about dupe finders. Most are OK but don't allow much automatic operation. I've found one called, strangely enough, Duplicate Finder v2.5 that i think is pretty good.

Does CRC and byte/byte comparisons and allows you to batch mark and batch delete or move the dupes. Has a resizable image display and the main view shows all file details so you can combine that with a quick review to be sure you're not moving or deleting anything you don't want to. I managed to move about 3500 of 19000 files that were duplicates to a new directory where I'll let them sit a while. Eventually I'll delete.

Without going to the site links that you have set up right now, for Mac or PC? Kind of interesting that you only have 19,000 files. Holy Mackeral Andi!

Does this work to eliminate hidden folders as well on the PC or Mac? Hidden folders are hard to find.
You have to be a Houdini to find those.

Off Subject: Cheers, the TV comedy series based on the bar on Newberry Street in Boston (Bull and Finch Pub) was based on this bar. I have an original membership card from there. #21. We used to shoot darts there on Fridays. There was also our host that set up "Thank God for Fridays!" back in the early 70's at the Bull and Finch. A great Brunch set-up.
My friend Bob Kennedy, designed the bull's head graphics for the bar. Bob still has many frame shops in Mass. Bob and Ted (his brother) have set up many frame shops from Boston to the Cape Cod area.

The real bartender's name was Eddie. Eddie still works there. The Owners name is David Kirchoff. Still owns it today and is still a nice person.
All I can claim is shooting a seven dart-out on a 301 game one Friday afternoon against a couple of guys that had teaned up from NJ. (Still holds.)
One of my friends (Kelley, from Lynn, MA) went to England and won with a six dart out. World Champion. TRUE! Look it up. Amazing but true.

Who would have have thought we would have had a computer back in 1980's?
