ie8 blocking AOL

recently IE8 on a WIN7 laptop has blocked all AOL.
even if i go to google and put in AOL i get a list of sites but clicking on them does not work.
i don't want to try Chrome etc.

Given the lack of details and information in your post, it makes it difficult to offer the kind of help, which might rectify the situation.

You say AOL is 'blocked'. What do you mean by blocked? What happens when you try to access AOL? Does the page start to load?

You indicated you "don't want to try Chrome, etc". Does that mean you don't want to use another browser, in order to rule out (or in) a problem with IE8? As opposed to a problem elsewhere on your system?

Are ALL the sites Google offers AOL sites? When I enter AOL into Google's search field, as you indicated above, it yields many different sites. All of which are not "AOL.com". Perhaps, you could explain it in a different way. I'm having a problem understanding what you mean.

It would also help to know if you're receiving any error messages when "IE8 blocks AOL". For example, some receive an error message similar to "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". If that were the case, I would suggest reviewing the following article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956196

I can think of a list of things to try, but it would certainly help narrow things down, if we had a bit more information.

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
is what i get when i click on any AOL listing in google
and when i put in ww.aol.com or .ca in the regular search bar.

yes i would prefer not to find out the other problems that all browsers appear to have!

PS when i use a proxy like vectroproxy.com then i can get to AOL - just not use the email probably the proxy settings.

If you need to use a proxy to access AOL then may be it is banned where you live?

Note, it is www.aol.com and not ww.aol.com

The connection has timed out
The server at www.aol.ca is taking too long to respond.
is what i get on firefox
i have written to AOL - no useful reply yet.

I was wondering if you have/had AOL set as your homepage (if that is what you want) in INTERNET OPTIONS, in control panel? If that is what you want your system to use as your default home page, this is normally what you would do, control panel, internet options, highlight homepage window, hit backspace, type in AOL.COM, click APPLY, then OK, and try it.

Ok, so are you using a Homepage related to your ISP(their version of Explorer) or is it straight MSN EXPLORER?

you need to test whether it is your ISP or not.

That means trying out other browsers like Chrome and Firefox, even though you would prefer not to use others.

Another option is to try Google DNS explained here; https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/

yes i tried firefox. (USB version- very good)

spoke to ISP - wasted an hour while they messed up the system.
then spoke to someone else at ISP who corrected the system and said

there is an outage between them and AOL that they are both trying to fix.

The many emails from AOL did not mention this
