Why is Chrome such a RAM hog?

Notice I didn't say CPU-hog, IE is probably worse in that respect.

I'm regularly watching in my task manager my Memory Usage. 3-4 tabs in Chrome (Yahoo Mail, Gmail, Calendar, CNET) are 6-7 processes (Chrome.exe) and about 600-700 MB of memory. More tabs, more memory...the sky's the limit, when it comes to Chrome.

By comparison, the very same tabs in IE7 would be about 200-250 MB.

Any thoughts?

Because RAM is cheap and fast.

If RAM usage bothers you I suggest using other browsers.

like Proffitt said, RAM is cheap now, there is an assumption made by devs that if you want more, you can probably go out and buy some, the develop software for the future of PC's, and Chrome's dev team is more forward-thinking and fast moving than most

As for what to do about it, (aside from uprooting browsers or opening your wallet) ....extensions are your friend wink

cnet video not working

I tried to access the cnet video recommended by Poultrygeist, but the video is not working. A drop-down describes the video (how to free up memory in Chrome...) but nothing happens when I click the "play video" button. In fact, none of the buttons do anything, just the drop-down description(s). sad

Why do they assume everyone has 4-8 GB of RAM? What about if I'm using a netbook? And it's not just Google, every developer makes that assumption now. I mean, if you have a Ferrari engine you'll try to fit it into a Ferrari chassis or similar, not a Chevy.

Even I don't cater to old machines UNLESS

Unless there's money in it. An old system I fielded in 2000 did not run on Windows 95 but they had some old machines on 95. We met about it and determined the price to get it working and then they compared that to what the new machines cost.

I won't reveal the result but for now, those that have less could stick with less leading edge apps.
