Is it possible to build your own web browser?

Rumors have it that anyone can build their own web browser with softwares which are (some) very costly. I heard that there is a free alternative to build a web browser in Visual Basic, but that is earmarked for technology connoisseurs and experts.

I want to try to build a new web browser (that's my wish since this January) and compete with the other browsers out there. Not that I am so proud, but that I want to have a try.

If you have any experience, can you share with me on how to build a web browser? Thanks!

I read your post and why not do that?

But that visual basic "browser" is perilous to say the least as the component is nothing more that IE in disguise. Why would you open yourself up to litigation if your browser was insecure and some lost their bank holdings?

The answer to both is "yes." The question is whether you have the expertise, time, and resources to accomplish the feat.

Yes, there are tools that let you "build your own browser." However, what you're actually doing is taking an existing browser and changing the way it looks. Nothing more. If that is your goal, fine. There are hundreds of Internet Explorer and Firefox clones out there already, though most were enhanced in some way by developers with the necessary expertise. But don't think that using one of the "design your own web browser during your lunch break" packages will produce a unique browser worthy of competing in the open market.
