Browsers forum: PROBLEMS WITH MSN messenger and hotmail

Click Start menu, and then click the Run icon.
In the small box that Opens, type the three letters: cmd then click the OK button.
In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and white text), type the following commands, pressing the ENTER key on your keyboard after each line:

net start cryptsvc
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll

It would be interesting to know if you are using Internet Explorer 6.
If you are, please check Help / About Internet Explorer. Under the version number (hopefully 6.0; if it is not, download the latest version) you should see Cipher Strength: 128-bit.
Mine was reading Cipher Strength: 0-bit.
This means that I could not access any MSN site such as Windows Upgrade, My MSN, Hotmail, etc.
If your Cipher Strength is 0, you should download Internet Explorer again. If this does not solve it, there are possibly some corrupt DLL files (3 of them, in fact). Do a web search for "Cipher Strength" and you should find MSN articles dealing with this. I can't give you all the site URLs because it depends on which OS you are running.

well I thought I was the only one who couldn't log on!!!....but it seems to be a common prob.....

I can't log in to MSN Messenger, neither can I open www.hotmail.com, and that's been going for a few months. when I try to log on to Messenger, it tells me there's a problem with the Inet connection(but I can open all other sites)and error code 80072eff

I'm on XP Pro, IE 6.0, Messenger 7.0
If someone can advise me what to do I'd be really greatful!!!!!!!!!!

Uninstall MSN Messenger 6.2 using the Add/Remove programs feature... also uninstall 7.0 Beta if it's still there. Then remove all remnants of MSN Messenger 6.2 and &7.0 from the registry. Be careful if not familiar with registry items. Always make a backup of the registry before making changes. Then install a fresh download of MSN Messenger 6.2.

The above would be my plan of action... have seen it work in similiar situations. Something may be corrupted or left over from the beta version.
