I'd given up on this thread since I'd already unsuccessfully done the routine with the IE Options. And it was happening on SO MANY well established sites (including this one, I think) that I was pretty sure it wasn't site programming errors.

But yesterday I think I solved this for myself. My computer came with the Sun type Java. I upgraded it: that didn't do the trick, but I then went into Control Panel, and thence to the Java Plug-in control panel. On the "Advanced" tab I changed the Java Runtime Enviornment from Default to the filename for the upgrade. That seems to have mostly done it. Still have the problem intermittently, but WAY less.

NB: Java doesn't show up on my Start Menu/Programs. But you can find the version by looking in Add/Remove Programs.

I've had this issue too. This might have occurred after a recent Java update, which is what happened in my case. Go to control panel (if XP) and open the Java control panel, select the 'advanced' tab, and make sure you check the boxes under the first section 'debugging' and under 'security general', check the last five boxes, from 'use SSL 3.0, to TLS 1.2' and see how it goes. If you don't have those options, make sure you start by updating your Java first, then reconfig it to allow those options. Hope this helps.
