Firefox "file corrupt" extraction failed.

Computer: HPa730n, XP home, 1.5 Gb RAM, 400 Gb HD, AVG free, Ad-aware, spybot running.

Just yesterday, it was Firefox was seemingly running fine. I had the latest version running (2.0.etc). Then, today, whenever I ran it, it would work for a bit, then a window would pop up, saying that a problem occurred, and it has to shut down.

I tried uninstalling it, downloaded a new copy (with IE7), attempted the exe file, then got the message that the extraction failed, and "file corrupt." I cleaned out temp files, disabled the AVG, then tried it again. No change.

I did a system restore point, to a week earlier. Firefox ver. 2.0.etc. was there, but when I tried to launch it, it wouldn't launch.

I found the great instructions on how to repair Firefox (John Wilkerson), and went through his instructions. I got to the point of downloading the exe file, launched it, but it gave the same message of "extraction failed, file corrupt."

I could sure use some advice on how to get Firefox up and running again. Thanks.

I went directly to Mozilla (via IE7), and downloaded the exe file (again), and ran it immediately, and this time, it executed normally.

When I tried to start Firefox, it said it was running already, and that I needed to restart the system. I did this, but it still gave me that message.

A quick search about this "already running" message brought me to a suggestion that the my profile in Firefox wasn't there.

I followed the directions to "start-run-firefox.exe -profilemanager" and this allowed me to create a new profile (I made sure that no other profiles were there), then when I restarted Firefox, it opened normally.

I had already copied my bookmark.html (bookmarks) to the desktop, which I then imported, and now everything is running fine.

Don't know what caused all this from the beginning, but there is sure a lot of information posted out there, that helped me get the answer.

Sounds like you were getting a corrupted file

It happens sometimes, downloading a file and it gets corrupted.

I am getting the same error as you but all I wan't to know is where you got that exe. file from mozilla? Can you tell me?

I thought I am the only one who has faced this sort of problem.But no there are many users who are yet facing difficulties like my one.
If you have any solution then please provide me with your suggestions.I will take appropriate measures for my problem.

That's no longer supported. Why not switch to 3.6.18 or 5.0?
