Firefox crashes upon launch or when I login a password

I'm having major problems with Firefox that just started today and wondered if someone might be able to give me some insight into what's going on.
The Firefox browser crashes either shortly after launch or after I sign into Yahoo to get my email or try to login to another web site like my bank's web page.
Each time, a box pops up that says Firefox.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
I've uninstalled the Firefox program twice, and subsequently reinstalled it, and it's still crashing. Strangely, each time I've reinstalled it the browser came back with all the extensions I had added, although those components were supposed to be gone with the un-installation. Firefox also hasn't been going through the whole setup routine of importing favorites from Internet Explorer, etc..., because the error program comes up shortly after installation.
The Internet Explorer browser hasn't been affected by this crashing problem. It's working fine.
When I checked the list of installed programs in the control panel I noticed about 20 copies of something called a "Windows Hotfix," each one with different numbers. They weren't there the last time I opened the programs list maybe a couple weeks or so ago, and there's nothing to indicate what they're for, unlike some other updates that are listed for Windows Media Player, Security patches, etc..
Do you know what these Hotfix things might be, and if they might have something to do with Firefox crashing?
P.S. I've scanned my computer for viruses, spyware and other nasties, and it seems to be clean.
