JAVA update will not install?

I'm running both IE Explorer and Firefox under XP SP2.

A couple of months ago, the latest version of Java stopped working on IE; Firefox was fine. This morning I tried downloading and installing the most recent version (JRE 1.5); I keep getting error messages telling me the "directory is locked" and installation cannot continue. I uninstalled Jave umpteen times, shut down my browsers AND my ZoneAlarm and continue to get the "Directory is Locked. . ." message. I've even CHANGED the directory destination in a manual installation, and still get the error message.

Now, I've really messed things up. Java won't even work under Firefox.

What should I do?

I used google.com and that fragment of the error message to read discussions about this. They note that the Windows Installer may be the issue. Here's the article with the utility to try.

I figured it out.

I figured out the answer actually a minute or so after I posted my question. Part of the Java installation process is the Uninstallation of previous versions of Java. The UNinstallation process didn't work in the installer package, and for some reason, using the REMOVE PROGRAMS feature in control panel wasn't uninstalling the folder.

The answer was to manually delete the JAVA folder from C:\Program Files.

Java now installed perfectly. Go figure.
