Microsoft Update Redirect In IE - How do I get rid of it?

When I open an IE window now I get a webpage from microsft asking me to try their Microsft update feature. This takes place despite the fact that I have a ''blank page'' as my home IE page. Also I have Norton firewall and Ad-watch SE Plus running.

The change came about when I accidently clicked on Yes to a message that said microsoft was trying to make a registry change. I can't figure out how to keep this page from coming up. I tried a restore running spysweeper and Ad-aware and that didn't help. the page I get sent to is:

Anyone have any ideas on how to remove this annoying change to my IE?

The page says "Adds an easy link to your Start menu:"

Check for related items in the startup programs:
Start > Run > type in MSCONFIG > click OK. When the System Configuration Utility opens select the Startup tab. Unselect any items relating to the offending adware > click APPLY > OK. Then restart the computer.

Post back how it goes.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I'm afraid that didn't work. Its not a process that fires up when the computer starts. When I open any IE window it shows up (even though I have blank set as my default). I can then navigate to any site I want so its not a hindereance in that respect. Its just really annoying to see that site come up and chew up bandwidth in the process. There's nothing on the site that lets me acknowledge reciept and stop receiving the message either.

It may be some sort of Java script thing that got loaded into the registry. System Restore does not appear to reset this element of the registry either. My anti adware and spyware software didn't give me any option to remove it as far as I can tell either.

Here is some additional information that might help. From my temporary internet files page I see the following lines associated with this problem:

This appears to execute a script that calls the following webpages:

http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/muoptdefault.aspx?

Soooo, if you have any suggestions, I'm all ears. Sheesh, its always something with that outfit. Think I'm going to get a Mac.

Here's a couple of things to check. Open Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/Advanced tab, under Browsing uncheck "Automatically check fot Internet Explorer Updates", click Apply/OK.

Right click your My Computer icon choose Properties, under the Automatic Updates tab uncheck everything, click Apply/OK.

I don't know if it will get rid of the problem but it's worth a check.

you might try selecting "Turn off automatic updates".

Let it run the update and it will not do that again. You can opt out of the updates (bad idea) and even tell it not to apply them ever again.

In closing, with all the issues with IE, Windows Update is about all I ever use IE for.

Thanks for the suggestions. Tried them all and the page still comes up. I installed the automatic update feature and I still keep getting a redirect to Microsoft's update site everytime I open an IE browser window. Soooo - I'm open to any ideas. Think I'm going to use Netscape.

IE jumps and redirects solution I found for myself

I had been doing scripts and other things but the jump or redirect keep happening. I then noticed something I had clicked called suggestive sites. Make sure this is turned off. It was actually simple to do with a click of the mouse.
