Getting error 7308. How do I move protman.dos to Net8.cab??

Recently started using our older computer again. Upon startup I get the error message 7308 that the computer can't find device driver protman.dos. I searched the computer for it and found it in C:\Program Files\America Online 7.0\net\Win98SE. Did a little research and found out that the file belongs in the Net8.cab file in Win98. So I found the Net8.cab file (which was zipped,) so I unzipped it and tried to move the file over, but it wouldn't let me. I get a message saying that I can't add to CAB files, and that protman.dos isn't a CAB file, and something about UUEncode, which I know nothing about. Is there a way to move the file, or is there a way to work around it? The computer seems to work ok, and I'm connecting to the internet ok. So it's not really interfeering except that I get the annoying message. Thanks. Ed.

There are CAB tools to do that however.

I truly doubt you are running a DOS network stack. I haven't seen that outside of a lab or classroom in many years.

In other words I think you are chasing the wrong issue.

OK, thanks Rob. Should I just ignore it? When I first started using the computer a couple of weeks ago, the old AOL program used to start automatically when the computer booted up, so I went into the internet options and got rid of it as a homepage. Funny that the file just happens to be in AOL happy, and I don't remember the message before that. But the message might have been there...anyway, it only appears for a few seconds upon start up. Thanks again. Ed.

You could examine all the areas that DOS and Windows 98 run apps and drivers from. I can't teach this in a forum but most 98 users are old hands so my first look would be in config.sys since it can be there and is no longer used. You could comment it out.
