Windows 98SE problem.

My friend donated his old Compaq desktop with Windows 98 SE to me. It boots to the Compaq screen and while there flashes two small rectangles on the left of the screen(one after the other,) then one large rectangle on the right of the screen. Then the screen goes black with a prompt, only responding to ctrl+alt+del which restarts the boot.

I can get to the BIOS screen by pressing f10 at start, but I don't understand how to reset the memory from there if its even possible.

Tried several downloaded boot disks(floppy) but nothing seems to work.


I could care less if all the information on the computer is deleted.

has failed. Please give more information on what happens when you try to boot from the W98SE boot floppy. "Nothing seems to work" doesn't tell much. If the hard drive has failed (the cause of the prompt) then it should boot from the floppy. If it won't, we need an answer to my question.

Nothing different happens when I use the floppy, other than the sound the computer makes while reading it.

Like I said the floppy was a file downloaded from the internet since my friend didn't have the original boot disc, would that have something to do with it?

The boot floppy . . .

contains at least a dozen files. If the downloaded boot floppy has only one file, it won't work. Usually the specific downloaded file is a .exe file. Running this file extracts all the boot files and copies them to a floppy.

Insert a blank floppy in the drive . . .

Run the .exe file you downloaded. It will create (extract) all the boot files and put them on the floppy.

Use the Win98SE OEM.

didn't work, but the website is highly recommended by everyone on this forum. The drives must not be connecting or something, it makes the sound of the floppy reading but nothing happens. I might just scrap it for parts. Thank you for all your help.

I thought this was a problem with the monitor but I plugged in my laptop and the color is normal?
