WIN98SE and INTEL mobo D865GVHZ compatability

Has any body been able to get 98SE running on the Intel D865GVHZ mobo without the shutdown problem? I format the drive, load WIN98SE, and then I load the Intel mobo software. 98SE starts and shuts down just fine until I attempt to install the LAN SW. Then the shut down freeze starts up. The only way I can get back to normal operation is to format the HD and repeat the process. I have tried the MS Shutdown updates with out sucess. No success with the "unoffical update" either. I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

Well you seem to have pinpointed the LAN driver as tha culprit, so have you checked the Intel website for a newer network driver than the one you've got?

http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/cs-008326.htm says it runs Windows 98SE.

However, note they say "Use of Intel drivers with older operating systems that
Microsoft has discontinued or does not fully support should be
considered AS-IS in respect to features, function, debugging and
usability with recently released Intel Desktop Boards.". So in fact they mean "might run". But it won't harm to try the latest drivers, of course.

Thanks for your interest. I bought the mobo used from a discount house. It came with a CD which holds the drivers. I don't know the date of the driver CD vs the date of the "latest" drivers on the Intel website. I also have a copy of the website drivers. A thought occurred that perhaps WIN98SE already has drivers for the LAN function and the Intel driver, when loaded causes a conflict. So I am trying now, on my roughly 24th clean boot install of 98SE, to see if the LAN function will work without having to install the INTEL driver. BTW, the game I am playing is to see if I can get 98SE fully functional without either a start up or shut down problem.

I do no see reason why use so ancient OS.
If you want hobby so experimental stuff like ReactOS may be much more fun. wink
