HELP with Internet Explorer error message...

I have an older HP desktop that in it's day was a nice one but it must be 10 years old or so. I have not used it in years because it had gotten slow. Anyway, I re-installed the entire windows 98 system with the recovery disk that had come with the pc to restore it to it's original condition. I got it hooked up to the internet with the help of TWC online support but my email and things were not working as they should like not being able to delete or respond to a message. I tried to upgrade the IE from it's current version of 5.0 to 6.0 which I have read is the latest one I can put on a W98 computer but everytime I got to the microsoft website or another download site, I keep getting an error message that says ie has performed an illegal operation and will shut down...SO...does anyone know why this is happening and how to get the upgraded ie on the computer...I am tired of hauling my laptop back and forth to work and would like to be able to use this old desktop at home just for the internet...but I want the full functionality of the internet...if you can help please respond as any info might be helpful. Thanks

Download the setup for Firefox 2.0.0.20 from http://www.oldapps.com/firefox.php?old_firefox=7 on another PC, burn it to CD and see if it will (a) install and (b) work. It offers at least as much Internet functionality as IE 6 does.

...then use Firefox to download an Internet Explorer 6 installation program, so that (offline) you can then uninstall Internet Explorer, reboot, and then reinstall it. That should fix the accumulated errors in it.

The original release of Internet Explorer 6 is the last version that runs on Windows 95/98/ME (and is sometimes called IE6 Service Pack 1).

The version called IE6 Service Pack 2 (called IE6 SP2), and all later versions, require Windows XP in order to run. However, IE6 SP2 might run under Windows 98SE/ME if the Kernel Extender program (KernelEx) is installed, which provides unicode support for Windows 9x.

Missing export Kernel 32 DLL

Thank you in advance! I have no idea what this is or how to get it. I have windows 98, I know its old but it still works! I'm trying to download AVG anti virus free edition 7.289. It says I need to get a computor name ExW inregards to export Kernel 32. Hope I've made some sence, can you help? Thank you again, Susie

Downloading a setup file to your hard disk never gives an error like that. But it might come from running the install program that you saved to your hard disk. That's something else.

Can you give the full and exact error message (without typo's and with the correct use of spaces) if you run the program? I doubt if it's "need to get a computor name ExW inregards to export Kernel 32". And can you tell where you downloaded it from? Are you sure the system requirements mentioned there include your version of Windows 98?

By the way, do you have the original Windows 98 (also called 'first edition', or Windows 98SE (second edition)? That makes a difference sometimes.

Since the virus definitions of AVG 7 aren't updated any more, it doesn't make much sense to use that program anymore.

Use Avast! v4.8 as the Anti-Virus for Windows 9x

The best free anti-virus program for Windows 98SE that I've come across lately is Avast Home Edition v4.8.1368 available from:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/6635/

As of October 2010 that version still works for Windows 98SE/ME.

Note that version 4.8 is the *last* version that will run on Win9x (v4.8.1368 being the latest release of v4.8).

Note also that the current version of this program, v5.0, is the WRONG version to use if you have Windows 9x, because it only runs on Windows XP or later. If you have Win9x you need v4.8.1368 or earlier.

I would think that you could go to winupd and get the same.....but perhaps they and other sites no longer talk to ie 5.
