Im in the process of making a windows 3.1 computer that will just play old dos games. I found out that windows 3.1 in now abandonware where can i get it online also old dos games.

are NOT "abandonware". microsoft still retains property rights and copyrights and has NOT released any of the versions into the public domain.

You can PURCHASE Win 3.1 from various sources such as http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Windows-3-1/dp/B000GGQHKA and http://www.magisterrex.com/proddetail.asp?prod=WEBOS003 but simply downloading it is an act of piracy and surely isn't worth the potential $10,000 fine.

You would also need a version of DOS to run Windows - http://www.emsps.com/oldtools/msdos.htm

If you happen to have a copy of MS DOS 6.2 the free step-up files for DOS 6.22 are still available -

They forced me into 98,then XP.We're at the mercy of the software we desire.More traffic,more info,more kbs.I had as much fun gaming on dial-up...i swear....i'm not saying i'd choose 'use classic windows3.1' settings on XP if it had them.
I wouldn't worry a whole lot about MS coming for you.However,they are greedy.

Anyone have any idea how to compile FreeDos in windows XP? I have spent months trying to figure this out and can't find anything other then Linux instructions.

But, oh boy! I can't believe there's anyone left alive who's never heard of Google!

There's about a million sites out there that host free downloads of "old stuff", especially games. Especially DOS games. Hell, they call XP old stuff in my circles! Never thought I'd ever again hear the phrase "Windows 3.1".

There are lots of legitimate freeware versions of DOS (DR-DOS and PC-DOS and 4-DOS all spring to mind). There are no legit freeware clones of Windows; but you can buy a legitimate 2nd hand copy of any old version of Windows (any pre-XP version) on eBay for less than $5.
