Will Windows 98 support USB or card slot wireless?

I'm having a problem getting this Compaq 1610 laptop with Windows 98 to connect to the net using a wireless connection. In fact,I can't make it work at all. Windows can't find a driver for these wireless connectors,and will not recognize the installation CDs that came with the connectors.
Can anyone tell me if the system will even work with a wireless card?
All the machine has is a jack for a dial-up modem connection. I have no access to a dial up server.

98 or 98se?

98 does not do USB well. Let's not repeat that lesson.

Also for a broadband USB "card" this is another dead end. Let's avoid discussions why.

So with a PCMCIA card there is some hope but what card are you asking about and do they give you drivers for 98?

It appears that what you have is not supported. I know some want to keep the old gear but sometimes you must move on since that's the cheap exit.

Hi,
Thanks for the advise. I really have my doubts about this wireless working on this old machine. I've tried to get the wireless working on both the Windows 98 and 98se.
I really thought I was getting closer,then the system crashed. There could be some other factors keeping this from working. The system just doesn't seem right. Heck,its a pretty old computer,guess I should have left it with the Windows 95,maybe that's all it can handle.
I have to walk away from this one and think it over for awhile.
It's just a hobby,so no big deal.

a PCMCIA wireless card if the PC has a PCMCIA slot. But, if the slot is 16 bit you may be in trouble. If the slot is 32 bit you should be able to get it to work. Search any good on line store (I like newegg.com) Echoing Bob, stay away from USB for wireless.

Windows 98 Wireless

Actiontek makes a USB wireless adapter that they say will work with Windows 98 SE. I purchased it and tried to make it work with Win 98; no luck. I think the network part of the OS does not recognize a WLAN but only a LAN. Upgrade to 98 SE and Actiontek said it will work. I got mine at Amazon.

Is that often this is not the adapter or the driver for that but the machine's motherboard driver or other issues.

This is now more painful than ever as Windows 98 is over 10 years old. Finding people that understand this is rare.

Netgear WG111v3 will work with 98 SE...

I just got the Netgear WG111v3 54 Mbps wireless USB 2.0 adapter working with Win98 SE on an old Compaq Presario desktop. It was fairly painful as I had to use another PC to find USB driver updates and burn to CD to load on the old box. I also found some "unofficial" service pack updates for 98 SE out there - just Google and you shall find.

Netgear also has an updated version of the software on their site that you will want to load.

I helped install it on a friends PC by loading an unoffical service pack for 98 SE amongst others including the MSLU software unicows.exe, the KernelEx-4.5-Final plus WG111v3 driver 1.1. It worked great.

Can I ask bspz or anyone to post a message to me as on my own PC it failed !
